3279: Clarification regarding sensor mounts (R28)
<R28>
<VUR12g> explicitly permits the rotation of VEX optical and vision sensors about their mounting base. It is understandable that this does not apply to V5 MS/HS rules. It is legal to rotate the blocks of the V5 Optical Sensor and V5 Distance Sensor relative to their bases, and to manufacture custom back plates for these sensors
However, QnA 3257 (3257: R28 Distance Sensor Clarification) suggests that, being able to modify the mounting bases, that the flanges are not considered to be "part of the sensor", in the same way that motor caps are not considered to be "part of the motor". As such, is the ability to rotate the sensors relative to their mounting base also legal in V5? If so, would it also be legal to use these sensors without the mounting base or manufacture custom back plates (such as screwed directly into a custom polycarbonate sheet) if they are not considered "part of the sensor"?
In addition to the changes mentioned in Q&A 3257, the revision to <R28> in the December 3 game manual update will also allow a sensor to be unscrewed, rotated relative to its mounting plate, and screwed back in. Teams will still be prohibited from using these sensors without the mounting plate and from manufacturing custom mounting plates.
This change is effective immediately.
