3240: Rule R12c: field elements on robot when its a 2x20?
<R12>Page 38 of the manual, rule R12c says field elements can’t be used on the robot. My team built FLOP this year and instead of some 2x20s from the competition kit, they used the bright yellow ones from the field kit. Still a vex piece, but I don’t believe you can purchase a yellow one otherwise.
Do they need to change this out to a gray one since they are technically using field parts on the robot?
The intent of <R12> clause C is to prohibit parts that were not specifically designed for use in Robot construction. This includes any Field Elements that are not considered standard VEX IQ Robot parts, such as Field Tiles, Field Walls, PVC Pipes, Scoring Objects, etc.
<R12> clause C does not prohibit the use of standard VEX IQ Robot parts (e.g., Beams, Pins, Standoffs, Corner Connectors) that were previously used as Field Elements.
To answer your specific question, 2x20 Beams from Field Element kits are legal for use in Robot construction since those are standard VEX IQ Robot parts.
