Under <R22> commercially available #4, #6, #8, M3, M3.5, and M4 screws up to 2.5” (63.5 mm) long are permitted, while there is a separate limit to the "shoulder" of shoulder screws. Commonly, longer screws are sold in a "partially threaded" form, especially at hardware stores and is often the only variety available in a given length. This type of bolt does not meat the standard definition of a "shoulder screw": A shoulder screw differs from machine screws in that the shank is held to a precise diameter, known as the shoulder, and the threaded portion is smaller in diameter than the shoulder. Q: Would a standard commercially screw/bolt available as "partially threaded" be legal to use with a definition length above that allowed for shoulder screws?
