Informações Gerais

Welcome VEX V5 teams to the Fall Illini Cornfield Clash Jr., hosted by Illini VEX Robotics, and presented by Prismier Inc., at the University of Illinois’ Siebel Center for Design!

Hidden within the cornfields of Illinois, with spots to compete at Illinois States on the line, this is the competition you don’t want to miss! This event is open to the public, so feel free to invite family members and/or relatives to the competition to cheer your team on and watch these robots battle for a spot at States. Click here to learn more about this season’s game, VEX Override!

Hosting our robotics competitions means a lot to us as Illini VEX Robotics. With the numerous Cornfield Clash competitions hosted over the last few years, this has been our way of giving back to the robotics community that brought us to who we are today. By providing a one of a kind memorable competition experience, we hope that we continue to instill the passion and dedication of becoming future engineers.

IMPORTANT: This event takes place on the University of Illinois Campus. All attendees, including but not limited to students, coaches, competition volunteers, and spectators, must always adhere to University Policies and Guidelines as well as all City of Urbana / Champaign laws while attending. Failure to do so may result in removal from the event.

Special Thanks to Our Sponsors

We are very grateful for the generous support from Illini VEX Robotics’ team sponsors Prismier Inc. and  Polymaker, as well as UIUC's Siebel Center for DesignElectrical & Computer Engineering Department, and Grainger College of Engineering for helping us run this event at its best.

Event Day Preparation

There are several things all teams must prepare for the competition. Please read the following carefully to prepare your team to have the best time competing:

  1. New Season = New Rules. Please make sure to read the game manual and any Q&As relevant for this event as it will be a first for many in attendence.

  2. Go through the inspection checklist to confirm your robot will pass inspection smoothly at the event.

  3. Double check you have all your robot related items, tools, spare parts, batteries, computers, and safety glasses for the competition.

  4. IMPORTANT: We are using the Smart Field Control for this competition. Please double check that your robot brain is updated to the latest version (1.1.5) and your team’s number is set on the brain. Instructions to do so can be found in the Robot Preparation tab.

  5. Each student and coach/mentor must have a completed and signed Consent Form in order to compete. This form can be found on the VEX Events page in the Dashboard section. Click on the Consent Form for your team, and fill out the appropriate form.

Event Day Info

See the Building Layout tab for a detailed event day map.

See the Food and Concessions tab for more details regarding those items.

To keep traffic around the building to a minimum, we ask that all spectators and parents be seated by the competition fields or standing along the ramp above the competition fields to allow space for teams, referees, judges, and volunteers to move around the competition fields with ease.

Dremeling at the pits is allowed, however, we discourage any excessive amounts of metal dremeling as this is hard to clean up post competition.

Note to Parents/Guardians/Relatives/Coaches/Mentors: As you cheer on your students during the competition, we kindly ask that you keep rule < G2 > of the game manual in mind. VEX Robotics is designed to be a student-centered program with the students leading their team and making all gameplay decisions regarding their robot and competition experience. During the competition, it is easy to get carried away to help your team succeed at the competition. By all means be encouraging and show your support, but allow them to take full ownership of their robot and make their own decisions throughout the event. This keeps the game fair for all teams and allows the students to experience and understand the complete engineering design cycle, allowing them to grow as engineers.

Teams that aid in setup will be allowed to use the fields for practice and scims the night before. If you would like to help setup for the competition, or will have teams show up the day prior, please contact the Event Partner.
VURC or VAIRC teams who wish to run skills at this event must contact the Event Partner in advance and help set up the building the day before or volunteer during the event.

Any kids who attend the event can also be a part of the event by helping as field reseters, getting a up close look at the robots on the field!

Política de Emergência/Condições Climáticas Adversas

In the rare case that some kind of emergency situation, bad weather, or other extunatiing circumstance that is out of our control, occurs during or before the scheduled competition day, and warrents the cancelation of the event, the Event Partner will cancel the event. Please see the Refund and Payment Policy tab for more information should this rare case arise in the future.

During Winter events, lots of snow and ice is expected in and around campus. Please excersise caution when driving and traveling about campus. Snow alone will NOT result in cancelation of the event.

Políticas de reembolso e pagamento

Full payment is due 2 weeks prior to the event unless an alternate payment method has been discussed with the primary coach/mentor of the team and the Event Partner. After this, unpaid teams will be moved to the waitlist allowing other teams a chance to attend the event. In this case, the EP will reach out to the teams on the waitlist to confirm whether they are still interested in the event. Waitlisted teams will be added in the order of those who have attended fewer competitions and then to those registered to the waitlist earlier. A team selected from the waitlist will have 24 hrs from the timestamp of the offer email to confirm attendance and pay the registration fee.

If the Event Partner cancels the event:
All teams currenty regisitered will recieve a full refund. These refunds will be sent out roughly a month following the intended event date.

If a Coach/Mentor completes registration for the event then chooses to withdraw or not attend:
If a team completes registration for the event and decides to withdraw less than 2 weeks before the event or the team decides not to attend the day of the competition, they will not receive a refund and are still expected to pay the competition fee if they haven't already. This is a hard deadline.

Teams running late should immediately inform the Event Partner or notify someone already at the event who can relay this information to the Event Partner. We cannot wait for you if you are late. Extenuating circumstances will be handled on a case-by-case basis at the sole discretion of the Event Partner, but does not guarentee competition participation.

Please contact the EP with any questions or to discuss alternate forms of payment.

Building Layout

A refernece layout of the building and the competition layout will be provided closer to the event date.

Smart Field Robot Preparation

We will be using the Smart Field Control system for running our matches for both qualification and skills. Two requirements are making sure your robot firmware is up-to-date and the team number is correctly set to allow the field controller to identify your robot when you connect to the field.

Updating Firmware (Required)

Double check the robot brain is up to date with the latest version of VEXos. To check, power on your robot and navigate to Devices → Brain Icon and see the version number on the right. It should read “VEXos 1.1.5”.

If you are on an older version of VEXos, connect your robot to your laptop used to program. Navigate to the update utility: for PROS users, go to the quick actions toolbar in VSCode and click on V5 Brain → Update VEXos and follow the pop-up prompts on the bottom right. If using the VEX Robotics VSCode Extension, an option to update will be provided in the Vex Device Info Panel, usually on the left side of VSCode window.

Changing Team Number (Required)

Double check that your robot has your team number correctly set to allow the field control to identify your robot when you connect to the field control. To check, power on your robot and navigate to Devices → Brain Icon and see the team number on the top left. Your team number should be present.

If your team number is not listed there, or a different team is listed, connect your robot to your laptop used to program. If using PROS, go to the quick actions toolbar and click on V5 Brain → Set Team Number. If using the VEX Robotics VSCode Extension, go to the Vex Device Info Panel → V5 Brain → Brain → system and hover over the team number. An edit icon will appear on the right.

Click the icon. For both options, an input field will appear on the top of your screen. Enter your team number as you are registered with and the capital letter of your team (ie. 12345A). Do not add any whitespace. Press enter and double check on the robot.

Changing Team Number (Optional)

The VEX brain also allows you to change the robot name. This is not required and has no effect on the robot. Look for the Set Robot Name option, which can be found near the Set Team Number options listed above.

What if I Don't Use VEX VSCode or PROS?

Other programming softwares and the web-based programming tool will have similar locations for updating VEXos and changing the team number.
