Here is a parent testimonial about helping with judging and how it is helpful and rewarding:

"I wanted to reach out to you to share that I think all parents should volunteer to judge a competition at least once while their kids are competing. My student has been at this for 9 years and this year was the first that I judged a competition. It helped me truly understand the amount of work involved and the layers of skills learned over the years.

Until then I had glanced at notebooks and watched matches but didn't realize how detailed the notebooks were. I didn't realize the competition encourages the students to explain and show each iteration of their robot throughout the season. They even require information about each team member's role and level of participation. This was also apparent in the interviews which truly blew me away. The best interviews showed all members on the team were involved. It was clear which teams put thought and effort into their interview prep as well as reviewed the competition rules to ensure all requirements were met.

As a parent I never really knew or thought about the non technical skills Vex required from the top teams. My conversations with my kid were usually about the technical skills of building and programming and less on presentations, public speaking, teamwork, and collaboration but those are equally as important in the competition. I think experience judging would help parents understand holistically most aspects of VEX as well as appreciate the incredible program.
