2682: R19a and R17a: VEX EXP Parts Clarification

  • R14a prohibits EXP electronics which would include EXP Brain, Battery, and Controller
  • R19e prohibits all products from VEX EXP unless allowed by clause of R17
  • R17a allows items that are cross-listed on the website as part of the V5 product line

Assumption: Parts unique to the EXP Kit are not considered cross-listed as the EXP Kit product page does indicate V5RC legal, so R19e prohbits them. These parts would include 1x5 Crank Arm with 23T Gear, 1x4 Plastic Linkage Beam, 1.75" & 2.75" Balloon Tire, 32.2mm & 48.5mm Wheel Hub, and EXP Robot Brain Mounting Bracket.

Assumption: Flat 2x Flat Beams and 4x Flat Plates are legal. It is reasonable for a team to modify existing 5x Steel Plate into similar sizes regardless of the different hole pattern.

Assumption: 6P Sprockets and Chain Link are cross-listed so are legal. The 6P Tank Tread Link, Traction Link, and Intake Flaps (SKU#: 228-3948) are not cross-listed and only VIQRC legal.

The following statement is on the VEX website under the EXP FAQ "Any part in the VEX EXP kits is legal for the VRC except for the EXP Robot Brain, EXP Robot Battery, and EXP Controller". Statement is highlighted in screenshot below taken on June 21, 2025. [Example Image]

Questions for clarification:

Question 1: Does this statement count as a product page or to be "cross-listed" under R17, thus making the all parts in an EXP Kit V5RC legal except for the electronics?

Question 2: If all parts are legal, would this override the legality of the 6P tank tread links, traction links, and intake flaps that are not cross-listed (possibly intentionally)?

Question 3: Are the 2x Flat Beams and 4x Flat Plates legal always even though the product page for steel plates (275-2023 or 275-2240) specifically mentions a 1/8" diamond hole?

Assumption 1: We believe you meant to say (bold and capitalization added for emphasis):

"...as the EXP Kit product page does NOT indicate V5RC legal, so R19e prohibits them"

If so, this is a correct assumption.

Assumption 2: This is an incorrect assumption. The metal parts from the EXP kit are not legal for V5RC use, per rule R19e.

Assumption 3: This is a correct assumption.

Question 1: No. The statement on the VEX Website under the EXP FAQ is incorrect, and will be updated.
