2790: Clarification on Rope/String Thickness

<R20e> An unlimited amount of rope/string, no thicker than 1/4” (6.35mm).

When teams knot their rope/string together, it can be thicker than this limit while the stock itself never exceeds the limit. I have the following questions:

  1. Does the thickness limit in <R20e> refer to the stock rope/string or the combined rope/string at all times such as when it is knotted?

  2. If the thickness limit in <R20e> does not refer to the stock of the rope/string, how would an inspector go about measuring rope/string if there were an axle, screw, or other component(s) wrapped within any rope/string?
