2819: Digital Notebook Transcription
With respect to the student student centered policy and the increasing use of digital notebooks at competition, we are encouraging our teams to work digitally from the start with the digital template. Coaches have raised the question; is it permissible for an adult/coach to transcribe into the digital notebook for students that lack the typing/language skills?
Thanks for your question, Matthew!
As described in rule <G2>, VIQRC is a student-centered program and Adults "should not provide an unfair advantage by providing ‘help’ that is beyond the Students’ independent abilities." This would include the transcription/typing you've described. If a Student has an IEP or other formal plan that suggests assistance for related tasks, a coach, teacher, or parent can request that accommodation through the process in this RECF Library article.
Here's some additional information from the RECF Competition Judging Committee: "It should also be noted that RECF encourages Teams to choose an engineering notebook format that first and foremost works for the Team. If Students struggle with digital notebooks, perhaps an actual physical notebook might be easier for those Students to use."
