General Info
THIS IS A LIVE, REMOTE, SKILLS-ONLY EVENT. SEE BELOW FOR DETAILS.
This event will be hosted via the Zoom platform. You will be sent an invitation to the Zoom meeting prior to the tournament. Check your email for Zoom Links
We have settled on a set queue/order of teams that we will cycle through. When it is your team’s turn, they may perform a skills match or defer to their next time around.
Zoom Meeting Info & Live-stream
Each tournament will have a separate Zoom Meeting. Please be sure to join the correct one for your age-level.
Per the REC Guidelines, each team (or group of teams) must have at least one adult present with them throughout the duration of the Zoom Meeting. We will also not allow spectators or parents into the Zoom call.
Rules & Procedure Review
Everyone should review the Robot Skills Challenge Format Options section of the Game Manual. You can access both on the VEX IQ Hub app and online here(starting on pg 28). The most important rules for you are:
- RSE7: Camera Requirements
- Cannot be pre-recorded
- Timer must be visible in-camera
- Camera (can be second camera i.e. phone or tablet) must be able to move around field at referee’s request.
- RSE8: Match Procedure:
- Driver must pair controller (with cable) before each match to verify they are driving
- Team must verbally/visually confirm they are ready to start
- Referee may ask to see field or robot before starting
- The team will start their clock when the referee says they are ready
- After the match, the team should work with the referee to verify scored game elements before the field is reset. The Head Referee will confirm to the Team verbally what is being counted.
- Inspection & Camera requirement.
- For this tournament, we will perform inspection at the beginning, but this will require teams to leave their camera on throughout the tournament with the robot in view. Teams can make small changes/fixes but need to do it on camera.
- This saves us time from having to re-inspect for each match. Please help us save time by leaving your camera on.
- For this tournament, we will perform inspection at the beginning, but this will require teams to leave their camera on throughout the tournament with the robot in view. Teams can make small changes/fixes but need to do it on camera.
With this in mind, I do still ask that you read that whole section to prepare for the tournament. We will review these at the event meeting. Also, do not stress yourself out too much about the rules. We need you to know them but we are not going to be trying to catch small mistakes with extreme scrutiny. We will work with you & your team.
Tech & Equipment Tips
- The general guide for camera positioning is 7ft away from the field & 7ft above the field. The easiest way to achieve this is with a ladder or shelf on the wall. Be sure to think about lighting as well so the field is visible.
- Generally, it is easiest to have one laptop/tablet/camera that remains looking down on the field with an additional device that can move around like a cell phone. The phone can connect to the Zoom as an additional participant and be used to give the referee a better view for inspection/scoring/etc.
- When joining the zoom without an account you can set your name. Use your team # or name when you connect. Alternatively, send your team # in the chat when each device joins and we can change your name on our end.
- Please leave your microphone muted when it is not your team’s turn. If you have questions direct them to chat first.

We’ve decided to use queueing for live skills. We set a queue or order of teams that we will cycle through. When it is your team’s turn, they may perform a skills match or defer to their next time around. This should be fairly easy with our low number of teams. Coaches will receive a queuing order in an email.
