SPECTATORS / CAPACITY LIMITATIONS
The Hawaii State VEX IQ Elementary Championship is an in-person event but not open to the public for in-person spectating; only team members and their registered coaches should plan on attending in-person. The championship committee has planned our attendance count and space allocations for one coach and four students per team.
Updated 2/10: Increased capacity of each team from (3 students, 1 coach) to (4 students, 1 coach).
The county of Hawaii has a limitation on gatherings at this time and have granted us permission to hold the event within set parameters on attendance. We cannot accomodate additional requests for students or coaches to enter the event site at this time; however, we will do our best to increase our facility capacity limit and inform you of these changes. Our first priority is the safety of all of our participants and we must abide by these health and safety guidelines. We believe all of your team members deserve to compete and are working hard to make this possible. Please review the judging format page to see how we are accommodating teams with additional members beyond our capacity limits.
The event will be available for viewing via live stream. Please see the live stream / webcast page on RobotEvents for access a few days prior to the start date for an active link.
Why is there a participant per team limitation?
We must abide by the County of Hawaii’s health and safety protocol for large gatherings during the pandemic. We have been granted permission to host an event under certain attendance limitations and health and safety measures.
Can I have my students rotate in and out of the venue?
No, we cannot safely monitor the flow of individuals in and out of the venue. We are limited in the number of volunteers we have on site and have made changes so that we can have fewer volunteers to increase the number of students that can attend. In addition, the purpose of the attendance limitation is to limit the potential spread of covid and allowing for participants to cycle in and out of the venue is counter-productive to this goal
CODE OF CONDUCT
We expect the following behavior and ethical standards at all REC Foundation-sanctioned events:
• Act with integrity, honesty, and reliability
• Behave in a respectful and professional manner with event staff, volunteers, and fellow competitors
• Exhibit maturity and class when dealing with difficult and stressful situations
• Respect individual differences
• Follow all rules as listed in the current game manual(s)
• Student-centered teams with limited adult assistance
• Safety as a top priority
• Good sportsmanship, which includes supporting your alliance partners
These expectations apply to all team members and all adults associated with a team including, but not limited to, teachers, mentors and parents. This Code may also apply to behavior outside of REC Foundation-sanctioned events where inappropriate actions are related to an event or participating individuals.
Judges will consider team conduct and ethics when determining awards.
Repeated or egregious violations of the expectations in this Code may result in consequences up to the disqualification of the team or organization from the current event and/or future events, and potentially removal from the program after review by the REC Foundation.

Judging Format
Updated 2/17: Added submission timeline for engineering notebook; Added remote interview date / expected time; Added guidelines for successful remote interviews.
Updated 2/7: Revised language used to describe judging process.
Updated 2/3: At this time, we have made the following changes to our judging and engineering notebook submission process. If we need to amend these plans due we will inform you through your contact email on robotevents.
Team Interviews
The Hawaii State VEX IQ Championship for Elementary School will conduct remote interviews one week prior to the tournament date via zoom.
While we are not ready to release the official schedule for interviews, please ensure that your team will be able to participate in a remote interview on Sunday, February 27, 2022 from between 10:00AM - 1:00PM. Each interview will take approximately 20-30 minutes in length; your team will only need to show up for your scheduled time slot. During the interview your team may be asked questions about their engineering design process, decision making, programming, game strategy, research process, or learning and discoveries while constructing your VEX IQ Robot.
An adult mentor will be required from your host organization will be required to sit in during the interview to ensure the safety of students connected to the ZOOM call. Please ensure that your organization continues to practice and adhere to the health and safety protocolof your remote location.
The judges may schedule an additional in-person interview at the event site
An adult mentor is required to sit in through the entire duration of the remote interview but should not talk or participate in discussion. We will release the official interview time slot schedule and the zoom room link within the next week once we have confirmed which teams are attending.
We recommend the following interview set up:
Quiet environment / Omnidirectional microphone – we recommend using an omnidirectional microphone set in the middle of all of your participating students. Choose a location with minimal background noise.
Stable/Reliable internet connection – use hardwiring if possible so that you will not lose connection during the interview.
Mounted Web Camera – avoid using handheld mobile phones as it is disorienting to the judges evaluating your interview.
Display Table – have your robot ready and with you so that your team can answer any specific questions the judges have about your design.
Demonstrate proper health and safety guidelines during your interview.
During the interview your team will be scored by a panel of respected industry professionals using the official VEX IQ Team interview scoring rubrics. You can help prepare your teams for a successful interview by reviewing the scoring rubrics with them ahead of time; however, please keep in mind our judges have an astute sense for authentic student responses. Always remember that we are striving for student-centered teams!
Will there be any in-person interviews? Can I choose to have an in-person interview instead?
At this time all initial interviews will be scheduled remotely. In-person interviews will only be used to further evaluate teams that have already completed a remote interview.
What should I do if I cannot make my timeslot?
Time slots are assigned by the judge advisor based on the judges’ availability and schedule. We ask that teams make every effort to make their assigned slot; please contact us immediately if there are extenuating circumstances which prevent you to do so.
Why are we conducting remote interviews instead of in-person interviews?
In order to accommodate more students in-person at the state championship we have asked many of our judges (and behind the scenes volunteers) to participate remotely. This allowed us to increase the team participant limit to four students; however, we still need to evaluate your teams! The remote schedule allows us to have all team members participate in the interview process.
Engineering Notebooks
Teams should expect to submit a physical copy of your engineering notebook on the day of the event at the time of check in (or no later than 8:00 AM). Teams with digital notebooks should be prepared to submit a printed, physical copy of their notebook including all applicable timestamps/records of revision history that you wish to include. We will not accept flash drives.
