General Info

The West Michigan Robotics Event Partners are teaming up to present the eighth annual Mega League Showdown — a high-energy competition bringing together up to 120 teams from across the region. Over six weeks, 24 sessions will be hosted at multiple locations, culminating in separate Middle School and High School State-Qualifying Finals Invitational for the top-ranked teams.

The Mega Showdown gives teams an opportunity to compete, experiment, and improve before the traditional Saturday tournament season gets underway. With multiple matches spread throughout the season, teams can test new ideas, refine robot designs, gain hands-on pit experience, become familiar with the field control system, develop match strategy, and learn by watching and working with other teams. Just as importantly, Mega League helps students build relationships across the West Michigan robotics community.

Session selection opens September 15 on a first-come, first-served basis. Registered teams will receive an email with instructions for selecting their sessions. The completed Mega Showdown schedule will then be published online.

Guidelines

  • We will follow all competition rules of the latest game VEX Robotics Override Game Manual.
  • Teams may request to compete on more nights. Teams with less than four nights selected will be given preference otherwise it’s based on first request.
  • Schedule change requests, including cancellations, must be submitted at least 24 hours before a session.
  • Some event dates are designated for only middle school or high school teams.
  • This specific event will not have awards. The top 24 qualified teams from each age group will be invited to the Mega Showdown Finals (more details below).
  • A limit of four teams per organiztion number (IE: 1234x) per session.

Skills

  • All teams will be entered in a parallel Blended Skills Invitational League.
  • Skills sessions will be held at alternate locations from the qualificaiton sessions.
  • More details will be provided in September.

Finals Invitationals

  • There will be separate invitational finals event for both middle and high school teams.
  • The top 24 teams from each age group will be invited based on the combined ranking from all of the sessions as determined by the VEX Robotics Tournament Manager software.
  • To qualify for the finals, teams are required to compete in at least four sessions.
  • To qualify for the finals, teams must also compete at least once in each Session Block (A,B,C). The session calendar is split into three blocks.
  • The finals will be scheduled across two nights. The first night will have five qualification rounds and skills, the second night will have two qualification rounds, skills, elimination alliance selection, elimination rounds, and awards.

Finals

The HS event championship finals will be held on Mon, Nov 16 & and Tue, Nov 17.
The MS event championship finals will be held on Mon, Nov 23 & and Tue, Nov 24.

Volunteering
Sessions are a great opportunity for volunteers (queue, referee, scorekeepers, technology) to learn and gain experience before the tournament season starts. Click on the Volunteer tab for more information.

Scrimmage
We’ll be hosting a scrimmage on Saturday morning, October 3. This event gives new teams, coaches, and referees a chance to practice robot inspection, field connections, and match play. It’s also a great opportunity to ask questions and learn best practices before the the Mega Showdown begins.

Volunteer

Mega League is the ultimate training ground for volunteers! Each session is intentionally compact, hosting just 20 teams over a quick 3-hour window. It’s the perfect way to get involved, get a front-row view of the action, and build your confidence before full-day Saturday tournaments begin.

New to VEX Robotics? No problem! You don't need a technical background to help out, and new volunteers are always paired with experienced mentors.

Roles & Skills You Can Learn:

  • Field & Scoring: Keep score, reset the field between matches, or operate the digital scoring system.
  • Event Operations: Learn field setup or manage a dedicated Skills field.
  • Team Support: Assist in the pits and help keep matches running smoothly on schedule.

Ready to join the action? Reach out directly to the Event Partner at your session to offer a hand!

Emergency/Bad Weather Policy

In case of bad weather conditions or possible cancellations please visit this page on events.vex.com or www.hudsonvillerobotics.com where updates will be posted about the event status as needed.

If the Event Partner cancels the event:
A full refund of all registration fees will be issued. Refunds will be made to the address associated with the team's event registration, regardless of the original payment method. The Event Partner will issue the refund using their standard refund process, which may include mailing a check, crediting the original credit card used for payment, or another payment method at the Event Partner's discretion.

If a Coach/Mentor withdraws a team or the team does not attend:
If a Coach/Mentor completes registration for the event and later withdraws the team or the team does not attend, no refunds will be issued.

Payment Deadline:
Payment is due within 30 days of registration. Teams that have not paid by the payment deadline may be moved to the waitlist to make room for another team.

Judging Format

Non-Judged
This event is designed to help teams gain competition experience and inspire iterative improvements to their robot design. We highly recommend they track their progress and document their plans in their engineering notebook. With that said, this event will not have judging during the league or the finals invitationals.

Note: Session Event Partners may offer opportunitities for mentors to review student notebooks and perform mock interviews to give students practice with judging.
