Health and Safety Policies
- Eye Protection: For VEX V5, all Drive Team members must wear safety glasses while at the competition field for a match. Eye protection is also highly encouraged in the pit areas and for anyone working near active robots.
- Footwear: Everyone in the venue—including students, mentors, and spectators—must wear closed-toe shoes to protect against falling objects, heavy robots, or dropped tools.
- Entanglement Prevention: Long hair must be tied back, and dangling jewelry or loose clothing must be removed before operating robots or working with power tools to avoid getting caught in moving parts.
- Ref Referees & Disablement: If at any time a robot’s operation or a team's actions are deemed unsafe to individuals, the field, or scoring objects, the Head Referee has the authority to disable the robot or disqualify the team. The robot cannot return until it passes a safety re-inspection.
- Staying Off the Field: Team members are strictly prohibited from stepping onto the competition field during a match or setup unless explicitly instructed by a Head Referee.
- Tool & Material Safety: Teams utilizing V5 robots must file down cut metal or plastic so no sharp edges are exposed. Precautions must also be taken regarding pneumatic pressure limits and battery/electrical thermal safety.
- Mandatory Adult Supervision: Every student participating in a competition must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult (coach, mentor, or parent) for the full duration of the event.
- Youth Protection Policy: The REC Foundation Youth Protection Policy requires background checks for coaches, event partners, and key volunteers. Adults must maintain strict professional boundaries and avoid physical isolation or private communications with minor students.
- Behavioral Safety: The RECF Code of Conduct defines physical and emotional safety as foundational to the program. Actions that cause trip hazards (like running in the pits or leaving tools in walkways) are classified as safety violations.
- Reporting Concerns: Any suspected child abuse, safety violations, or severe behavior issues can be reported anonymously directly to event leads or through official RECF reporting channels.
