About the Team
Our team is made up of 4 boys – Aditya, Kian, Aryan and Ryan, aged 10-11 years old. We are a school team and are in Year 6 at Orley Farm School in London, UK. This is the first Vex IQ Robotics season that we are competing in our whole time at school and our aim for this season was to get to Nationals. As it turned out, we won the Innovate Award to qualify for Worlds. Our team is very happy to be going to the World Championship in Texas.
About this Season
We started the season with the Swish robot, but since then we have heavily modified it. Before Worlds, we plan to build a new robot that is much lighter and more efficient at scoring goals. This is our first season of competing in VEX IQ. We have entered seven regional competitions this season such as at Orley Farm School, Haberdashers Boys School and Derbyshire. It was at the City of London School Regional where we qualified for Nationals by winning the Teamwork Champion award. We also won Robot Skills Champion and the Innovate award. At the Derbyshire Regional 2, we won the Design award. During the VEX UK National Championship in Telford, we won the 2nd Place Teamwork award and the Innovate award (for our PID autonomous code). We found autonomous so hard that we did not get it working until the UK National Championship, by incorporating the gyro into the code to ensure the driving was exactly straight. We have faced lots of robot challenges this season and these are covered in our engineering notebook. Finally, ahead of the UK Nationals, we had to make our robot lighter and shorter for the autonomous skills. We also faced some teamwork problems which we resolved by splitting out the roles as well as learning how to work better together as a team.
