General Info

***UPDATE: 12pm Wednesday, March 11, 2020***

Dear VEX IQ Teams

We have continued to review the ever-changing guidance from county health departments across the state, focusing on guidance from each respective county health department where a state championship event is being held. The REC Foundation will follow the guidance of public health officials for the safety of our students and the communities we serve.

As you may know, late last week the Santa Clara County and San Mateo County health departments issued guidance to postpone or cancel mass gatherings. These orders resulted in the VEX IQ State Championships (San Jose) - scheduled for this past weekend - being postponed and the VEX VRC State Championships (San Jose) - scheduled for this coming weekend - being relocated to Alameda County and closing the event to the public.

Since making those announcements, county health departments in Contra Costa, San Benito, Alameda and other counties have released additional guidance recommending the cancellation or postponement of mass gatherings. Realizing the necessity of following the guidance of health officials and the increasing impracticality of finding appropriate sites for the San Jose state championship events, the REC Foundation has decided to cancel the following events:
We know this decision will disappoint many, and ask that you realize the REC Foundation and impacted state Event Partners did not come to this decision easily. We also know that this decision will have significant impact on many teams that have made great sacrifices this season to get to the state championships. We are working to resolve the outstanding issues caused by these cancellations and kindly ask that teams refrain from contacting the Event Partners at this time as they will have no further information to share other than what is contained in this message:

Transferring to other state championship sites: Given the ever-changing situation across the state, logistics, timing and other factors, we are not allowing teams to transfer to any other state championship sites this weekend. We would kindly ask that you do not inquire about this option.

Refunds: Refunds will be provided to teams. All impacted teams will be contacted next week by their respective state Event Partners with information on the refund process and procedures. We would kindly ask for your patience with this process.

CA Worlds Spots: The Worlds 2020 spots allocated to the cancelled California events will be filled from California teams by platform and grade level from the World Skills list. We do not yet have a timeline on when this will happen, but anticipate it will be in the next two weeks.

VEX Worlds 2020: VEX Worlds 2020 is still on and will proceed as scheduled. The updates for Worlds can be found at: https://www.roboticseducation.org/vex-robotics-world-championship-2020-plan-your-visit/

We sincerely apologize to the impacted teams, but remain committed to putting health and safety first.

***UPDATE: 5pm Friday, March 6, 2020***

Late yesterday, the Santa Clara and San Mateo County Health Departments issued new guidance to the public regarding the Covid-19 virus (coronavirus). The guidance specifically addressed mass gatherings and recommended the postponement or cancellation of all non-essential gatherings.

We believe student and community safety is the priority, and we will follow the explicit recommendations of the local public health officials. As such, the VEX IQ State Championships scheduled for Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8 at the Hiller Aviation Museum are being postponed. Please note that the new event date listed is a placeholder and not an official date for a re-scheduled event.

Please know that the REC Foundation is working with the impacted Event Partners, and we are assessing options that are viable and appropriate under the circumstances. At this time, we have no updates on how long the postponement may last or what the impact will be if the event is ultimately cancelled. We will be following up with all teams next week to provide an update.

At this time, all other California State Championship events are moving forward as planned.

UPDATE: 3/3/20 Re: COVID-19

As of March 3, 2020, the County of Santa Clara County Public Health Department generally is not recommending the rescheduling of public events in the county.

We are following the CDC Interim guidelines for community events, and are asking that participants and spectators to practice good personal health habits. Promote everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, which include:

  • Stay home when you are sick, except to get medical care.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces and objects daily.
